Auditioning by Heart Hosted by Jana Van Dyke

Learn about the techniques of auditioning by living truthfully to the character, knowing your lines “by heart,” rid nerves, enhance your acting abilities, increase booking rates.

It is recommended to take both the one-day intensive called ReActing by Heart and the three-day Auditioning by Heart workshop because both sequentially deepens the actor’s understanding of connection and behavior, which is proven to book more jobs.

ReActing by Heart

The Safety Net Under Your Audition:

Focus your preparation by:

  • Deepening your connection to the other character

  • Actively listening and being present

  • Fighting for your objective

  • Responding truthfully in the moment

This class is the PERFECT lead-in to Auditioning by Heart! Actors get more out of the 3-day intensive when they take the ReActing By Heart Workshop with it. In fact, it lays the foundation to the 3-day intensive by deepening the actor’s understanding of how to ace an audition.

Join this incredible 5 hour class!

Should you need to cancel, your  replacement student must be found at least 48 hours before class starts to give time to re-think parings and find new sides, especially if the class is outside of the Los Angeles area.  Please refer to cancellation policies -

A TESTIMONY - ReActing By Heart - Actor: Frank Carrijo

I just finished taking ReActing By Heart class and I finally "get it", not just rationally, but I really FEEL what it means to be in the moment in a whole new, unforgettable, usable, effortless way.

After you understand the rules & technicalities, you will notice that your body and mind will automatically start to respond to the other person. You'll start to have emotions hit and change you. You'll GENERATE THOUGHTS, then look at the other person and say them. You'll really get that the script gives you WHAT to say, but taking in the other person, gives you HOW to say it -- no "pre-shaping".

Even though I am not really thinking up the lines, because the writers has already done that, I feel like I am. ReActing By Heart has helped ME, be more of a REAL human being when auditioning and anytime I'm acting.

It also is the perfect prerequisite to Auditioning by Heart! It supports you, so you can feel safe doing what Crystal is asking of you. I hope you take ReActing By Heart and see for yourself.

Two Ways to attend Auditioning by Heart!

1) CRITIQUED ACTOR: Sign up to have your work critiqued in front of the class, (your resume will be requested after you register)  Limited to 12 actors.

2) NON CRITIQUED ACTOR: you can choose to self-critique with Crystal’s guidance (please read about this below) and/or you can choose to be critiqued outside of class (for an additional fee) Limited to 12 actors

What is a Non-Critiqued Actor?

The name “Non-Critiqued Actor” is terrible for what this option really is. This actor actually gets everything the Critiqued actor gets out of the class, with one difference, they have an in-class opportunity to learn to apply the lesson to his/her own audition tape. Let me explain…

This actor receives the same audition material as those being critiqued in front of the class. When Crystal puts the 12 critiqued actors on tape, non-critiqued actors are put on tape either by a Teacher’s Assistance (T.A.). —Should you choose not to have your audition taped, then you may be a reader for those who do. (Actors can learn a lot about auditioning when they sit on the other side of the camera.)

After this, Crystal will breakdown the sides, and as a class, you'll all learn to do the script analysis of each day's material. Crystal uses the Critiqued actor's tapes to demonstrate her method for you. Most likely, you will "See yourself" in the work of the 12 actors whose critiques you'll hear. After learning from Crystal exactly what to look in your audition, together with the other Critiqued actors, you’ll follow your TA to a space to watch your auditions playbacks one-at-a-time, and you’ll apply what you just learned to your own work. (A class TA will comment on your work only if you desire such.)  Actors consistently tell us after attending class as a Non-Critiqued student, that based on Crystal's breakdown, explanation, script analysis and watching the other actors critiques, they KNEW EXACTLY how to self-critique each day’s audition. They were "crystal clear" on which of their choices were strong, and which could have been better, and how to improve in the future.

Non-Critiqued actors who discover they do actually want Crystal to critique a particularly confusing scene, or even all 3 of their audition scenes, may choose to do have Crystal do so. Crystal will make time to critique your tape, either at the end of the day or at a later time for a small fee.  ($40 per taped audition) A Non-critiqued actor can choose to have Crystal critique their tapes at the time of registering OR at any point before the end of each day's class. (Just ask you TA)

* Minimum Age 18 yrs for Auditioning By Heart (Certain exceptions apply, please inquire)

Returning Students are Family!

If you have taken Auditioning by Heart before, and are a returning student, "refresh" your skills at a very special discount, by signing up to be a guided self-critiquing actor (referred to as “Non-critiqued”, see above. Crystal would love to critique you, but there is only time to critique 12 actors during class-time, and as a returning student, she believes it is time for you to learn the important skill of self-critiquing your work.  As you know...after Crystal's lecture and thorough breakdown of your sides, you will be able to watch your tape and be clear where you were weak, where you were strong, and how to improve with your next audition! --Of course, if you still want Crystal to critique you, you may also sign up anytime for a critique outside of class (See the "Sign up after class button on this page").  We LOVE having you back!
